Week 39: Enjoy the Silence Part 3, A Meditation

This is an exercise I look forward to sharing with you. It is a practice of "not trying" in the presence of others. This meditation follows the pattern of other traditional practices for cultivating lovingkindness, equanimity, and sympathetic joy.

Begin with breath awareness.

Bring to mind a "friendly" person - someone in whose presence you feel comfortable sharing silence.

Imagine them walking towards you, and sitting at a comfortable distance in front of you.

Imagine looking into the eyes of this person, with ease. Don't "try." There is no need to say anything, but to be in this person's presence. Take a few breaths.

Imagine this person leaving, and another person approaching. It can be another "friendly person", or a person you feel more neutral towards.

It can be a "neutral" person, or someone you want to feel more comfortable around.

Imagine looking into the eyes of this person, with ease. Don't "try." There is no need to say anything, but to be in this person's presence. Take a few breaths.

Continue this process as many times, with as many people, as feels genuine.

An interesting variation of this meditation is to practice it in front of a mirror, but with the eyes closed. At the end of the meditation, keep the sense of genuine ease and authentic eye contact, and open your eyes. Make contact with your authentic self.
