Teaching Philosophy

I am committed to helping each of my students discover and achieve their personal and professional aspirations.  I also am committed to providing a positive role model of intellectual engagement, lifelong learning, and community service in academics and public health. I view the classroom as a forum for students to discover knowledge both through my transmission of information and through their active engagement with that information.  In this view, students' personal experiences and intellectual skills are fundamental to the process of learning.  My job is to present new ideas and information clearly, to model and help students build specific ways of thinking, and to create an environment that encourages and rewards active engagement (reflection, discussion, evaluation, integration, and application of knowledge).

My essay "Zen and the Art of Teaching" provides a detailed description of my teaching philosophy and practice, as it relates to achieving the above goals.
